Halda Therapeutics

Lab & Office Fit-out

New Haven, CT

Halda Therapeutics is a biotech firm founded by Yale University professors. After receiving funding from venture capitalists, Halda retained AKF to provide MEP/FP engineering design services for the 7,500 SF laboratory and office fit-out within New Haven’s 142,000 SF Winchester Works building. The building, a former arms factory located in Science Park on Yale’s campus, was renovated in 2012 as a Class A corporate headquarters. AKF was tasked with converting the corporate office space into laboratories to support Halda’s research and development efforts.

Halda was the first of what will be many Science & Technology tenants in the Winchester Works building, so AKF was tasked with developing methods to incorporate new infrastructure that will support the prospective research and development needs of the building. This included design of new outside air and lab exhaust systems, as well as central lab gases to support Halda and future tenants.

Open laboratories include an open ceiling concept that required additional coordination between AKF, the architect, and existing base building infrastructure to provide a clean finished product. The space also consists of an enclosed tissue culture room, conference rooms, open/closed offices, break room, and various support spaces. The base building’s existing HVAC, electrical (normal and emergency power), fire protection, and fire alarm systems were adequate and used to support the Halda fit-out.
