Weill Cornell Medicine is a leading academic medical institution in New York City with a mission for excellence in patient care, scientific discovery and the education of future physicians. To meet the ongoing needs of an increasing student body, and the need to modernize and diversify student housing facilities, Weill Cornell Medicine is constructing a new student residence tower designed by the architecture firm Perkins & Will with MEP / FP engineering, low voltage design, and Energy + Performance services provided by AKF. The new building will consist of approximately 175,000 SF and have 221 residence units. The building’s two cellar levels and ground floor contain the amenity and common areas with residences located on levels 2-16.
Weill Cornell Medicine is focused on their environmental impact, requiring the new tower to be coordinated and reviewed with respect to the carbon emissions limits outlined in NYC Local Law 97. To meet this need, the building is being designed as all-electric to focus on carbon reduction. Systems designed to achieve the fossil fuel-free building include central air-to-water heat pumps with heat recovery, heat pump DOAS units with energy recovery for ventilation air, and water-to-water heat pumps utilizing the central heating HPs to provide domestic hot water for the facility.
