Grand Central Terminal
East Side Access, Chiller Plant Commissioning
New York, NY
Servicing locals and tourists since 1913, the Grand Central Terminal is one of the most iconic transportation hubs in the world. Due to its age and historic nature, Grand Central has been met with challenges adapting to the changing landscape of New York City transportation. East Side Access is one of the largest transportation infrastructure projects currently underway in the United States. The new access will provide direct Long Island Railroad (LIRR) service into a brand new concourse below This landmark expansion is just one step in the process to provide New Yorkers with a faster and easier commute from Long Island and Queens to the east side of Manhattan.
To meet the terminal expansion needs, AKF provided commissioning, engineering, and project management support to the construction manager. AKF assisted the construction team with meeting the schedule requirements for project turnover to the NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). AKF commissioned the chiller plant, steam plant, air systems, and pumping systems that will service the new expansion concourse, while AKF's engineering team assisted with creating and updating drawings. AKF also aided Schiavone Construction with creating schedule updates, management of trades for commissioning, technical reviews, system troubleshooting, and document management. Commissioning and Testing team members were present on site to provide continuous and immediate support to Schiavone throughout the construction phase.
